Shane Coen is the principal-in-charge and founder of Coen+Partners. Over the past sixteen years, Coen+Partners’ work has been recognized as progressive and timeless, receiving over twenty five awards for landscape architecture, planning, and urban design. Shane’s studio is acknowledged by the AIA, the ASLA, the Committee on Urban Environment and the editorial staff of influential publications such as the New York Times, Metropolis, Dwell, and Architectural Record. The New York Times architectural critic, Anne Raver, describes Shane’s work as ‘pushing Midwestern boundaries’.

Coen+Partners’ work was recognized with two national ASLA awards in 2009.  In 2003, Shane and his firm received a Progressive Architecture (P/A) citation for the redesign of Mayo Plan #1, a new residential community in Rochester, Minnesota.  This award, given for the radical reinterpretation of a standard subdivision plat, represented only the second time a landscape architect had received this honor in the prestigious competition’s fifty-year history. Shane also received the Special Award for Collaborative Work from the American Institute of Architects Minnesota Chapter.

In addition to his practice, Shane lectures regularly on his collaborative work and the direction of landscape architecture. He was a featured speaker for the Emerging Voices Lecture Series, sponsored by the Architectural League of New York, upon receiving an Emerging Voices Award for 2009. Other notable speaking engagements include panel participation in the lecture series “The Influence of the New West, Confounding Expectations: Photography in Context” at the New School in New York and at the symposium “Sustainable Waterfronts: Learning from the Dutch Experience” co-hosted by AIA Chicago and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.  Shane has upcoming lectures at the University of California Berkeley, the University of Southern California, and Princeton University.

Shane and his firm recently concluded a two year collaboration with the Walker Art Center and the Carnegie Museum of Art on ‘Worlds Away: New Suburban Landscapes,’ a nationally traveling exhibition featuring Mayo Plan #1.  Coen+Partners is currently exhibiting work in New York City with a team of influential architects led by ARO as part of the Downtown Alliance’s Strategic Framework for Greenwich Street and Lower Manhattan.

Shane continues to focus on building collaborative relationships with influential contemporary architects, designers, and artists throughout the world.
