Adrian Residence Dellwood, Minnesota

This lakeside residence rests on the quiet eastern shore of White Bear Lake in Dellwood, Minnesota. Coen+Partners collaborated with Altus Architecture + Design to seamlessly thread together the layout, materials and detailing of the architecture and site, while enhancing views to and from the lake. Two existing oak hillocks inspired the layout for the house and structured the circulation sequence around the home. A slender aggregate drive navigates around the first oak knoll, expanding to a gracious auto court at the front of the house. Here the bluestone of the building façade is repeated in an arcing drystacked wall that gives an edge to the knoll and auto court. A continuous bluestone surface connects the entry points of the residence through the interior of the house and back outside toward the lake.

Lakeside, the progression from the house to the water’s edge is mediated by a formal pool terrace and a long, rectangular plinth of lawn. Massings of grasses and equisetum soften the transition between terrace and lawn and help to define the private spaces of the house. A narrow drystacked stone wall articulates the edge of the pool terrace, framing views to the lake and contrasting the undulating landform of the second oak knoll.
