Golob-Freeman Cabin Madeline Island, Wisconsin
The Golob-Freeman Cabin on Lake Superior, Wisconsin, is a collaborative effort between Coen + Partners and Salmela Architect. The site elements provide an austere palette against which the seasonal change and intricate textures of the surrounding landscape are showcased. Minimal drives and paths highlight the long, rectangular buildings.
The cabin is sited along the toe of the bluff overlooking Lake Superior, within a mature birch grove that was maintained. A highly visible central axis of the site is articulated by a narrow path terminating at a gathering area and dramatic outdoor fireplace. The path bisects the cabin and creates a thin cut through the existing prairie, tying the building to the landscape with a single, subtle and poetic gesture.
