Grossman Terrace Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Grossman residence is a seasonally-occupied penthouse located in the Kenwood neighborhood of Minneapolis, overlooking the Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden and the downtown skyline. The client’s extensive sculpture collection drove the design and layout of the terrace features.

Emphasizing form, materiality and the views beyond, the terrace becomes a dynamic framework for the placement of sculpture, integrating landscape elements and artwork through careful detailing.

Coen + Partners utilized a simple palette of bluestone, ironwood and steel, which provides a quiet context for the sculpture and the dramatic views. A thin raised planter of perennial grasses complements the linearity of the space and creates a soft boundary. Coen + Partners also designed a privacy screen for the client’s bedroom terrace and assisted in the selection of additional site furnishings.
