K. Streeter Deephaven, Minnesota
The Streeter residence is located in a suburban development of mid- to late-20th century homes in Deephaven, Minnesota. The structure, sited towards the rear of a large sloping and heavily wooded lot, gestures outwards to the existing wetlands, an existing birch grove, and a stand of mature oak and cottonwood trees. The house was precisely sited amongst these natural features, both emphasizing them and maintaining their ecological integrity.
The landscape architect and architect have developed, through a thirteen-year relationship, a method for creating a strong dialogue between architecture and site. Coen + Partners placed both the house and sauna, and through a study of the finished floor elevation, extended the interior of the house into the exterior, reinforcing the connection between architecture and landscape and allowing easy movement around the structures. The simple spatial system elegantly responds to issues of circulation, use, and privacy and is carried out in a subdued material palette that complements the architectural palette.
