Coen+Partners is seeking multiple landscape architects and urban designers, from early-career to senior-level experience, for full time, or long-term contract positions in support of a wide range of regional and global projects.  Candidates would support existing and new project teams working on local, regional, and national urban public realm projects, Department of State Bureau of Overseas Building Operations (OBO) Design Excellence projects, and international work that includes a city-wide cycling and pedestrian mobility network and a 22-mile redevelopment corridor that includes highway removal, detailed design of more than 1,000 acres of urban park and recreation space, multiple transit-oriented development districts, comprehensive green and blue infrastructure, and an integrated health and wellness program.

 

Candidates must be passionate about design and design thinking, proactive problem-solvers, and highly skilled in conceptualizing, developing and implementing sophisticated and complex landscapes and urban design projects. Key responsibilities for these positions will include leading the design of projects in a multi-disciplinary team setting, fostering a collaborative team environment, and supporting the development of new systems and processes to improve project delivery. These positions will be integral in project visioning, client and community engagement, business development, and the long-range growth and diversification of the studio.

The Design Director will collaborate with Principals and Project Managers to lead design visioning across multiple projects throughout the office.  They will be critical to the future development of the Coen+Partners brand identity.  They will be actively engaged in business development, as well as the growth and mentorship of staff.

 

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 8-20 years of design experience in a progressive studio environment

  • Experience overseeing and driving the design process of multi-disciplinary teams on a range of project sizes

  • Ability to mentor and develop staff across all skill levels

  • Ability to direct the design of multiple projects at once, collaborating with project managers and design team members

  • Developed understanding and approach to contemporary and context-based design

  • Discipline and confidence in complex projects and a keen understanding of the detailed design process and documentation and managerial requirements of project construction

Senior Project Designers and Project Managers will be the lead on individual projects across multiple scales and project types.  They will be rigorous, organized managers of the process, collaborative team members, and technically sound Landscape Architects.  They will be the primary point of contact for clients and will lead the office’s systems development and quality control.

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 8-20 years of design and project management experience in a progressive studio environment

project Designer

Project Designers are the primary production force across all projects in the studio.  They are empowered to collaborative with Project Managers and the Design Director from the early conceptual stages of a project and will provide the research, graphics, and documentation to support design efforts.  Under the supervision of Project Mangers, they will develop projects from Concept through Construction Documentation and will be actively engaged in Construction Administration.

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 2-7 years of design experience

  • Ability to take proactive ownership of projects and responsibilities

  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment and work independently

  • Developed understanding and approach to contemporary and contextual based planning and design

  • Experience working on all stages of a project, from concept design through construction documentation

  • Basic understanding of construction techniques and documentation systems

  • Strong conceptual thinking with an ability to communicate ideas graphically, verbally and in written form

  • Discipline and confidence in complex problem solving

  • Desire and ability to travel internationally

  • Capacity to work across multiple representation platforms, including hand graphics (sketches and renderings); AutoCAD; Revit; Illustrator; InDesign; Photoshop; Rhino and SketchUp.

 Job Description:

  • Support project managers in the coordination of multi-disciplinary design teams

  • Develop meaningful research and analysis of physical and cultural context to support design concepts; and products, planting, and materials to support detailed design development

  • Develop conceptual ideas through clear direction, independently and in collaboration with others

  • Support the development of project graphics, diagrams, presentations, renderings, and physical models

  • Support the presentation of design concepts to clients, government agencies, and stakeholders

  • Support the design and implementation of public meetings and community engagement efforts

  • Develop conceptual design ideas into schematic plans

  • With support, develop schematic drawings into construction documents and specifications

  • Review and refine construction documents through quality control processes

Senior graphic Designer

Senior Graphic Designer will be responsible, with support of senior leadership, for building and developing an environmental graphics practice integrated within an existing design studio.  The Senior Graphic Designer will integrate immediately into multiple major urban design projects to develop environmental graphics, wayfinding, and branding for built environments.  Additionally, they will direct all graphic output of the office, from marketing and promotional material to presentation graphic standards. 

 

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 8-20 years of graphic design experience in a progressive studio environment

  • Experience developing branding and graphic design content from concept through implementation

  • Developed understanding and approach to contemporary and contextual based design

  • Confidence working as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary design team

  • Proficiency with Adobe design software

  • Experience translating design work into physical, constructed elements (signage, wayfinding, etc)

  • Desire and ability to travel domestically and internationally

  • Minimally a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design from an accredited program or commensurate professional experience.

 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Work with Landscape Architecture and Urban Design teams to develop comprehensive branding and environmental graphic concepts for public realm and institutional projects

  • Coordinate with wayfinding experts, support staff, and other freelance collaborators to support design efforts

  • Work with the design team to develop environmental graphics concepts into constructible elements and signage

  • Develop working relationships with other firms, clients, and government agencies through the course of a project

  • Work directly with clients throughout a project, actively representing their interests as well as the interests of Coen+Partners and the project as a whole

  • Develop graphic standards for internal and external presentations, documents, and communication

Mobility Planner

The Mobility Planner will be responsible, with support of project managers and senior leadership, for building and developing capability and capacity for bike and pedestrian transportation planning expertise integrated within an existing design studio.  The Mobility Planner will integrate immediately into multiple major urban design projects to design bike and pedestrian facilities in varying contexts.

 

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 5+ years of mobility planning and design experience in a progressive studio environment

  • Experience in analyzing, planning, and designing bike and pedestrian facilities in urban environments

  • Developed understanding and approach to contemporary and contextual based design

  • Confidence working as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary design team

  • Proficiency with Adobe design software, AutoCAD, and BIM experience (preferred)

  • Experience translating design work into physical, constructed elements (bike paths, intersection design, etc.)

  • Desire and ability to travel domestically and internationally

  • Minimally a Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Civil Engineering, or Transportation Engineering from an accredited program or commensurate professional experience.

 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Work with Landscape Architecture and Urban Design teams to develop comprehensive mobility and transportation concepts for public realm and institutional projects

  • Coordinate with other mobility and transit experts, support staff, and other consultants to support design and production efforts

  • Work with the design team to develop mobility concepts into constructible elements

  • Develop working relationships with other firms, clients, and government agencies through the course of a project

  • Work directly with clients throughout a project, actively representing their interests as well as the interests of Coen+Partners and the project as a whole

Staff accountant (part time)

The Staff Accountant will report directly to the CFO and will be responsible for documenting, maintaining and improving the financial systems and controls for the organization. The position has the potential for full time employment, growth, future management as well as the autonomy to develop an accounting and HR department and a system of best practices for the creative organization.

 

Preferred candidates will have the following attributes:

  • 1-5 years of accounting, finance or related professional experience

  • Ability to prioritize competing priorities

  • Strong analytical, quantitative and problem solving skills: able to clearly link financial results to operational performance drivers, generate alternatives and drive positive change

  • Attention to detail, with high standards of accuracy and review, but must have ability to see the big picture

  • Ability to think creatively, highly-driven, and self-motivated

  • Clear thinking/problem solving: successfully led projects/process improvements within operations/finance functions; able to quickly grasp new idea

  • Minimally a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
